How to Choose the Right Neighborhood for Your Lifestyle

A home is more than four walls. Explore the factors that matter most when choosing a neighborhood, from schools and commute times to amenities and community.

Two-story home with a wide driveway and mature trees

A home is more than four walls. You can renovate a kitchen or repaint a bedroom, but you can't change the street, the commute or the community around you. That makes choosing the neighborhood one of the most important parts of buying a home. Here are the factors worth weighing before you decide.

Your daily routine

Think about a normal week. How far is work, and what is the drive like at rush hour rather than on a quiet Sunday? Where are the grocery store, the gym, your doctor and your family? A neighborhood that saves you twenty minutes a day gives you back hours every month.

Schools

Even if you don't have school-age children, school boundaries matter. Homes in sought-after school areas often hold their value well and attract more buyers when it is time to sell. Check which schools serve an address, since boundaries don't always follow neighborhood lines, and visit the schools if you can.

Amenities and lifestyle

Picture how you like to spend your free time:

  • Parks, trails and places to walk the dog
  • Restaurants, coffee shops and local businesses
  • Shopping and everyday services
  • Community events, libraries and recreation centers

Some buyers want a quiet street far from traffic. Others want to walk to dinner. Neither is right or wrong; the best neighborhood is the one that fits the way you live.

Look at the neighborhood at different times

A street can feel very different on a weekday morning, a Friday night and a Saturday afternoon. Drive through at different times, walk the block, and notice traffic, noise, parking and how well homes are kept. If you can, talk with a neighbor or two. People are usually happy to tell you what they like about where they live.

Think about the future

Ask about planned roads, new developments and changes nearby. Look at how long homes in the area typically take to sell and how prices have moved. Consider whether the neighborhood will still fit you in five or ten years, as your family, work or plans change.
